1.Papercutting/paper-cut – 剪纸 jiǎnzhǐ
It is one kind of Chinese folk art, which has a history over several thousand years and was recently classified by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage.
Paper is cut only by hand. Cutting can be divided into two types: the first — cutting with scissors, using several sheets of paper (usually no more than 8 sheets at the same time), the master glue them on paper and using a sharp knife bring the pattern to perfection; the second method — cutting with a knife, first the paper is folded several times, put it on a glue made of ash and animal fat, then carefully cut out the pattern on paper, holding the knife in his hand vertically. If master made a small mistake, cut too much, he must give up with this paper and start new one. Some big Jianzhi can took one year of work.
The result is worth the effort. Papercutting is very beautiful, it represents Chinese culture, have reasonable price and if you gift it as a room decoration, your friend will be happy!
