In an age of increasingly sophisticated translation apps, why do we still need a real language teacher?
答案或许藏在那些无法被算法捕捉的瞬间里——当一个外国学生终于理解“上火”不只是字面意思，当“撒娇”不再是词典上那句生硬的释义，当语言背后那层微妙的文化薄纱被一只温和的手轻轻掀开。
The answer may lie in moments algorithms cannot capture—when a foreign student finally understands that “shanghuo” means more than its literal translation, when “sajiao” ceases to be a stiff dictionary definition, when the delicate cultural veil behind language is gently lifted by a patient hand.
在上海一栋百年老洋房里，我们遇见了一位这样的老师。她毕业于华东师范大学英语专业，曾在外企职场历练，如今站在中文教室里，用自己的方式告诉每一个学生：学习语言，从来不只是学习字词和语法那么简单。
In a century-old heritage villa in Shanghai, we met such a teacher. A graduate of East China Normal University with a degree in English, she honed her skills in the corporate world before stepping into the Chinese classroom. Today, she tells every student, in her own way: learning a language has never been just about vocabulary and grammar.

“我毕业于华东师范大学英语专业。在成为对外汉语教师之前，有一段外企工作经历。”
“I graduated from East China Normal University with a major in English. Before becoming a Chinese teacher, I worked in a foreign company.”
她说得轻描淡写，但这两段经历，恰恰构成了她如今课堂上最独特的底色。英语能力让她能够精准理解外国学生的困惑，而外企职场经验，则让她对“商务中文”的真实场景信手拈来。
She says it plainly, but these two experiences form the unique foundation of her classroom today. Her English proficiency allows her to grasp precisely where foreign students struggle, while her corporate background makes real-world business Chinese scenarios second nature to her.
“这段经历让我十分熟悉和外籍人士的沟通和思维方式，也积累了很多职场场景经验，对我在商务中文授课方面帮助特别大。”
“That experience made me very familiar with communicating with expats and understanding their way of thinking. It also gave me a wealth of workplace scenarios, which has been enormously helpful in my business Chinese teaching.”
第一次上课
First Teaching Experience
回忆起第一次站上讲台，她依然印象深刻。
She still vividly remembers her first time standing at the podium.
“第一位学生是职场人士，有商务沟通需求。最开始我担心语言沟通存在障碍，但依托我的英语基础和外企经验，很快拉近了距离。”
“My first student was a working professional with business communication needs. At first, I was worried there would be language barriers, but with my English foundation and corporate experience, we quickly bridged the distance.”
那堂课让她明白了一件事：外国人学习中文，大多带着真实的使用需求。课堂内容不能悬浮在半空，需要稳稳落在他们真实的生活与工作里。
That lesson taught her something important: most foreigners learning Chinese come with real, practical needs. The classroom content cannot float in the abstract—it must land firmly in their actual lives and work.
如何学好中文
Learning Chinese Effectively
问她学汉语有什么秘诀，她的回答出人意料，不按套路出牌。
When asked for tips on learning Chinese, her answer is unexpectedly off-script.
“我一直觉得，学习语言不只是学习字词和语法，更重要的是理解语言背后承载的文化。”
“I’ve always believed that learning a language isn't just about words and grammar. More importantly, it’s about understanding the culture the language carries.”
她建议学生不要孤立地背诵知识点，而是结合文化场景去理解中文表达。遇到难解的词，她有一个特别的要求：不要用母语去硬翻译。
She advises students not to memorize isolated bits of knowledge, but to understand Chinese expressions within cultural contexts. When encountering difficult words, she has one specific request: don't try to force a direct translation into your native language.
“让学生不要用A-A方式去翻译语言本身，而是去理解语言背后的文化。比如‘上火’、‘撒娇’，就很难找到相对应的英文单词去翻译。”
“I tell students not to translate language in a word-for-word way, but to understand the culture behind it. Words like ‘shanghuo’ or ‘sajiao’—it's really hard to find exact English equivalents.”
这种教学理念，在翻译软件大行其道的当下，显得格外珍贵。算法可以转换词汇，却无法传递一层文化滤镜。
This teaching philosophy feels especially precious in an era dominated by translation apps. Algorithms can convert words, but they cannot transmit a cultural lens.
教学之外的生活
Life Beyond Teaching
课堂之外，她是一个热爱旅行的人。
Outside the classroom, she is someone who loves to travel.
“我喜欢旅游，喜欢感受世界各地不同的人文风情、欣赏各地风景。在旅行中接触多元文化，让我更懂得文化差异，更容易站在各国学生的角度思考问题。”
“I love traveling, experiencing different cultures and landscapes around the world. Being exposed to diverse cultures through travel has made me more sensitive to cultural differences, and it's easier for me to see things from my students' perspectives.”
有时候，当她与某个国家学生聊起自己在那里的旅行经历，一瞬间就能拉近距离。
Sometimes, when she mentions her travel experiences in a student's home country, the distance between them shrinks in an instant.
“通过自己的经历，刚好发生碰撞的时候，会与学生瞬间拉近距离，且得到学生的认可。世界这么大，真的要去看看。”
“When my own experiences happen to overlap with a student's world, we connect instantly, and I earn their trust. The world is big—you really should go and see it.”

聊到这里的工作氛围，她的语气里带着一种自在。
Her tone relaxes when she talks about the atmosphere here.

至于建议，她很简单地提了一句：可以多多组织中外文化主题活动，学生能有更多课外口语练习场景，老师们也可以互相交流授课技巧。
As for suggestions, she offers a simple one: organize more cultural exchange events where students can practice speaking outside the classroom, and where teachers can exchange teaching techniques.
谈到对外汉语行业的未来，她没有空谈趋势。
When it comes to the future of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, she doesn't talk in empty trends.
“随着中外交流持续加深，对外汉语行业拥有广阔的发展前景。越来越多外国人希望学习中文、了解中国。”
“As exchanges between China and the world continue to deepen, this field has broad prospects. More and more foreigners want to learn Chinese and understand China.”
而她最珍贵的收获，不是职业光环。
But her most precious reward is not career prestige.
“我热爱这份职业。最珍贵的收获就是：可以通过教授中文，向世界展示真实的中国文化。这件事一直让我感到开心，也十分自豪。”
“I love this profession. The most precious thing is that through teaching Chinese, I can show the world real Chinese culture. This has always made me happy, and deeply proud.”
教学理念
Teaching Philosophy
采访的最后，我请她总结自己的教学理念。
At the end of our conversation, I asked her to summarize her teaching philosophy.
“我认为教学一定要灵活变通，做到因材施教。不能只讲授语言知识，更需要丰富的中外文化知识作为支撑。只有这样，才能引导学生理解语境差异，让学生可以在工作、生活当中恰到好处、得体地使用中文。”
“I believe teaching must be flexible and tailored to each student. It's not enough to just teach language points—you need rich cross-cultural knowledge as a foundation. Only then can you guide students to understand contextual differences, so they can use Chinese appropriately and gracefully in work and life.”
窗外，老洋房的树影斑驳。她说这话时平静而坚定，像是说出一个练习了很久、终于可以脱口而出的句子。
Outside the window, dappled shadows played across the old villa's walls. She spoke with a quiet conviction, as if delivering a sentence she had rehearsed for a long time—now ready to be spoken with ease.
