· Chinese lesson,Learning Chinese,

Introduction

In the heart of downtown Shanghai, time slows down the moment you step into a century-old heritage villa.

This is Mandarin Inn. And for Celeste, it’s more than a place where she teaches Chinese—it’s the nexus of her connection with the wider world.

Everyone who learns a language has probably experienced that moment when you forget the cold commercial goals and truly feel the living, breathing person behind the words.

After a sixteen-year career in finance at Fortune 500 companies, Celeste found that warmth here. Instead of spreadsheets, she faces faces from all over the globe. Instead of profits, her conversations revolve around I.M. Pei’s architecture, the terroir of coffee, and how to turn a tricky Mandarin tone into a delightful exchange.

We sat down with Celeste to talk about her transition, her classroom, and a simple yet profound belief: “The student's heart is my heart.”

Self Introduction

Before becoming a Chinese teacher, Celeste’s path seemed clearly defined. A Financial Management graduate, she spent sixteen years navigating the world of Fortune 500 companies like GE and Parkway Health.

The seed of change was planted quietly, through a friendship with a Chinese language teacher. As curiosity deepened into understanding, a thought took hold: perhaps connecting with people, rather than numbers, felt more like her calling.

In March 2023, Celeste officially made the switch. “Numbers are certain,” she laughs, “but people are not. Each student walks in with their own unique culture, confusion, and expectations. It makes the job unpredictable—and I quite like that.”

First Teaching Experience

Her very first student was a Japanese professional preparing for the HSK 4 exam. That experience taught her that while exam techniques might help a student pass a test, what truly takes them further is the resilience to speak up and not fear losing face.

She often tells her students, “The moment you make a mistake, you’re actually the closest to truly learning.”

Speaking of the secrets to learning Chinese, Celeste is refreshingly honest, without a hint of mystique.

“The four tones are usually the toughest nut to crack,” she notes. “There’s a saying: one part talent, nine parts hard work. There truly are no shortcuts in language learning—just listen more, speak more, read more, and write more. Don’t be afraid of mistakes or being laughed at. After all, failure is the mother of success.”

Life Beyond Teaching

If you only saw Celeste as a Chinese teacher, you’d miss the most fascinating parts of her.

She loves coffee—jokingly calling it her “life support”—but then she’ll delve into a serious discussion about coffee-producing regions and their cultures. She used to enjoy wine so much she considered becoming a sommelier. She walks her dog, which she admits, is for staying healthy.

But what truly makes her eyes light up is architecture. Specifically, the work of I.M. Pei.

“My lifelong dream is to travel the world and see all of his 50-plus works,” she says with the reverence of a pilgrim. “So far, I’ve only checked off a few.”

These hobbies, seemingly unrelated to the classroom, have woven themselves into a subtle cognitive web. “Teaching Chinese as a foreign language demands rich cultural knowledge,” Celeste explains. “Immersive reading nourishes me, and cultural travel truly broadens my perspective. Chatting with people from all over the world is a joy. Everything is interconnected. What’s a small hobby today might become the very thing that forges a profound connection with a student in a future class.”

Mandarin Inn

When our conversation shifts to Mandarin Inn, Celeste’s response is both sentimental and disarmingly frank. “Initially, I was drawn in by this old Shanghai-style villa. The European-inspired interior decor is completely my style,” she confesses, unafraid to admit her initial “aesthetic attraction.”

But what made her stay were the people. “Over time, I’ve grown to deeply appreciate my colleagues here. They’re friendly, professional, and highly efficient. It’s an honor to work alongside them.”

Her view on the future is grounded and pragmatic. “Rather than talking about career development, I focus more on the present. On preparing today’s lesson with full attention, on treating every student and every class with sincerity. That’s what truly counts.”

And her biggest takeaway so far? “The people. I’ve met a lovely group of students and coworkers. In the end, people are the most precious thing.”

“What I love most is the orderly, quiet teaching environment in the heart of the city.” When mentioning Mandarin Inn, her voice softens with a sense of place. It’s the aura of the heritage building, and the unhurried rhythm of the institution. She hopes the cultural activities will continue—because it’s these soft things that fuel students’ passion for the language.

Teaching Philosophy

At the end of our conversation, I asked her to summarize her teaching philosophy. After a moment’s thought, Celeste offered a short but powerful phrase: “The student’s heart is my heart.”

She elaborated: “It means putting the students’ needs first, always thinking from their perspective. I’m not aiming to teach them the most flowery Chinese, but to equip them with something they can truly use.”

Outside the window, the shadows of trees danced gently in the afternoon light, gracing the old villa. This belief, much like the building itself, is understated yet possesses a power that quietly transcends time.
