In the century-old garden house that is Mandarin Inn, we met Timir. An EVP who journeyed from a small Indian village to leading over a hundred Chinese professionals. Living in Shanghai for over a decade, he once believed English was all he needed. Until his return in 2024, when he made a decision that surprised those around him—to learn Chinese, truly and systematically. Not out of professional necessity, but from a deeper realization. "For over a decade in China, as a hardcore engineer, I was convinced that technical precision in English was enough," Timir's candor is striking.

His career, a brilliant arc of light from a small Indian village to Shanghai, where he became EVP at Signify, was built on data, processes, and precise commands.

But upon returning to Shanghai in 2024, this certainty began to waver. He realized true innovation isn't in perfect spreadsheets—it's in the trust between people. "And trust," he says, "requires understanding the soul of a culture, which only comes through its language—because some expressions simply can't be translated." This insight turned learning Chinese from a choice into a mission: to earn trust, bridge worlds, and co-create the future.

As Head of Emerging Markets, Timir's schedule is relentless. Fixed class times were impossible. He started with a group class but quickly missed too many sessions. So, he switched to 1-on-1 tutoring for its flexibility.

At the end of our chat, we asked Timir for his favorite Chinese sentence. He thought for a moment, and then said, with an accent but crystal clear: "I enjoy riding motorcycles, photography, and travel. But now, what I love most is learning Chinese with Teacher Alice—because this isn't just about learning a language; it's about learning to understand a culture, understand a group of people, and also understand myself."
