在上海一栋老洋房的木地板吱呀声里,有一间教室。这里没有励志横幅,也没有高分承诺。但常常能听到不同口音的汉语,围绕着一杯茶、一份合同、一次商务谈判,或仅仅是“周末去哪儿”这样的日常,慢慢地、真实地展开。带领这一切的,是常华。

In a century-old villa in Shanghai, where wooden floors creak with history, there is a classroom. No motivational banners, no score guarantees. Instead, you’ll hear Chinese in various accents, unfolding slowly and authentically over a cup of tea, a contract draft, a business negotiation, or simply weekend plans. Guiding this process is Chang Hua.

在成为对外汉语教师之前,常华是一名外企销售。她习惯于谈判桌,却最终在中文的抑扬顿挫里,找到了一种更安静的连接感。她的学生说,常老师不像在“教语言”,更像一个向导,陪着每个成年人,用中文重新进入生活。我们和她聊了聊这条路,以及语言、工作与人的温度。

Before becoming a Mandarin teacher, Chang Hua worked in sales for multinational corporations. Accustomed to the negotiation table, she eventually found a quieter form of connection in the tones of Chinese. Her students say she doesn’t feel like a language instructor, but rather a guide who accompanies each adult learner as they re-enter life through Chinese. We sat down with her to talk about this path, and about language, work, and human warmth.

Self Introduction

“我叫常华,英语专业毕业,在从事对外汉语教学之前,一直都在外企做销售。”常华这样开始介绍自己。没有太多的转折铺垫,仿佛这两个身份之间的鸿沟,在她看来没那么大。但事实上,正是那段销售生涯,日后塑造了她独特的教学方式。

“My name is Chang Hua. I majored in English, and before teaching Chinese, I worked in sales for multinational companies.” That’s how she begins, without too much drama. As if the gap between those two identities wasn’t so vast after all. But in truth, that sales background shaped her unique teaching style later on.

第一次上课

First Teaching Experience

她清楚地记得,第一位学生是韩国人,已经通过HSK4级,想学商务汉语。“在试讲时,我除了介绍商务汉语的特点,还结合了自己的工作经历,讲了我对商务汉语的理解和在实际工作中的灵活运用。”四年后,那位学生离开上海前告诉她,之前试听过好几家机构,只有常华说“课本只是参考,更重要的是情境练习,只要有需要,我们随时可以抛开课本”。

She still remembers her first student, a Korean learner who had passed HSK 4 and wanted business Chinese. “During the trial lesson, besides introducing the characteristics of business Chinese, I shared my own work experience and my understanding of how to use it flexibly in real business settings.” Four years later, as he was leaving Shanghai, the student told her that before meeting her, he had tried several schools. Only Chang Hua said, “The textbook is just a reference; what matters more is situational practice. We can put the book aside anytime you need.”

这位韩国学生的一句话,让常华第一次清晰地看见:对外汉语教学不是照本宣科地读生词和课文,而是真正帮助那些在中国工作、生活的外国人。只有如此,他们才能有动力坚持下去。

That student’s words made one thing crystal clear to her: teaching Chinese is not about mechanically drilling vocabulary and texts, but about genuinely helping people who live and work in China. Only then will they have the motivation to persist.

如何学好中文

Learning Chinese Effectively

谈及学习方法,常华没有给出万能公式,反而非常尊重差异。“每个人都有自己的学习方法和秘诀,有人靠图像联想记忆,有人靠听和模仿。”她停顿了一下,“但我觉得不管用什么方法,先从自己感兴趣的话题或者日常常用词汇入手,做到及时学以致用,这样更容易获得成就感,也就更容易坚持下去。”

When it comes to learning methods, Chang Hua doesn’t offer a one-size-fits-all formula. Instead, she shows genuine respect for individual differences. “Everyone has their own way. Some use visual associations, others listen and imitate.” She pauses. “But whatever method you use, I’d say start with topics you’re interested in, or daily vocabulary that you can use right away. Applying it immediately makes it easier to gain a sense of achievement, which helps you stick with it.”

这是典型的常华式回答——没有捷径,但有路径;不神话努力,而强调“正反馈”。在她看来,成年人的学习,需要的不是更多的知识灌输,而是一个能即时感受到“能用”的闭环。

This is a typical Chang Hua reply – no shortcuts, but a pathway. She doesn’t romanticize effort, but emphasizes the importance of a “positive feedback loop.” For adult learners, what they need isn’t more knowledge cramming, but a closed loop where they can instantly feel “I can use this.”

教学之外的生活

Life Beyond Teaching

如果只是聊教学,常华的形象是不够完整的。她平时喜欢练瑜伽和弹古筝。这些看似无关的爱好,其实是她教学的隐秘延伸。

If we only talk about teaching techniques, our portrait of Chang Hua is incomplete. In her spare time, she practices yoga and plays the Guzheng. These seemingly unrelated hobbies are actually a quiet extension of her teaching.

“首先,这些兴趣爱好能让我更容易和学生找到共同话题。而且,瑜伽和古筝都有很深的文化底蕴,比如阴阳平衡,传统文化中的音律五行。”她解释道。有些学生对太极或传统乐器感兴趣,她就能帮忙搭建理解的桥梁。语言之外,文化理解往往在这些兴趣交汇处悄然发生。常华像是在用身体和指尖,无声地备课。

“First, they make it easier for me to find common ground with students. Moreover, both yoga and Guzheng have profound cultural roots—like the balance of yin and yang, or the five elements in traditional music theory.” When a student shows interest in Taiji or traditional instruments, she can effortlessly bridge the gap. Cultural understanding often happens right at these intersections of interests. It’s as if Chang Hua prepares her lessons silently, through her body and her fingertips.

关于这个行业

About the Profession

谈及对外汉语教师职业的未来,常华很坦然。“随着中国在全球贸易、科技等领域的参与度加深,中文学习会逐渐从文化兴趣转向职业发展需求。这个职业不会因为AI实时翻译的出现而消失,优秀教师依然具有不可替代的价值。”

Talking about the future of the profession, Chang Hua is candid. “As China deepens its participation in global trade and technology, Chinese learning will gradually shift from cultural interest to career demand. This profession won’t disappear because of AI real-time translation. Excellent teachers will always have irreplaceable value.”

她说的不是抗拒技术,而是提醒我们注意一件事:语言教学里真正珍贵的,可能不是“信息传递”,而是人与人之间的见证与陪伴。她提到自己至今保留着执教第一年时学生写给她的信,今日看来依然满心感动。“通过中文这根线,我看到了无数种人生被打开的样子。”

She isn’t resisting technology, but inviting us to notice something: the truly precious thing in language teaching may not be “information transfer,” but the witnessing and companionship between people. She still keeps letters from students in her first year of teaching. “Through the thread of the Chinese language, I’ve witnessed countless lives being opened up,” she says.

“What I love most is the orderly, quiet teaching environment in the heart of the city.” When mentioning Mandarin Inn, her voice softens with a sense of place. It’s the aura of the heritage building, and the unhurried rhythm of the institution. She hopes the cultural activities will continue—because it’s these soft things that fuel students’ passion for the language.

Advice for Future Teachers

对于正在备考国际中文教师的新人,她的建议务实而有温度:“今后的考试会越来越注重实际运用,所以除了掌握理论知识,还应该多揣摩实操案例。但理论知识依然是基础,只有这个基础坚固了,在实操中才能做到游刃有余。”

For those preparing for the international Chinese teacher certification, her advice is practical and warm: “Future exams will focus more on practical application. So besides mastering theory, spend time analyzing real cases. But theory is still the foundation. Only when the foundation is solid can you move with ease in practice.”

在她看来,授课内容和方式从来不是一成不变的,因为面对的是活生生的成年人,各有各的性格、工作和生活需求。老师要做的,是看见这些真实的需要,并随时调整。

For her, teaching content and methods are never set in stone, because she faces real, complex adults with different personalities, jobs, and life needs. What a teacher must do is see these real needs and adapt accordingly.
